David A. Perkins is currently an AWS Senior Certified Welding Inspector #15090028 and a NAVSEA 271 Level III Examiner in the VT, PT and MT nondestructive testing methods.
He started his career with the U.S. Navy where he was a Steelworker (SW) attached to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133. While serving in the Navy, Petty Officer Perkins performed structural steel fabrication, welding, maintenance and repair at various locations around the world including Bosnia, The Middle East, Sicily and Guam. Upon his departure from the Navy, he earned his American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (AWS CWI) testing on the AWS D1.1 and started his civilian career as a shipbuilding inspector for a major contractor on the Gulf Coast. During this tenure, he performed hull structural, material, and piping inspections on multiple Naval ship classes.
From that point, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering Technology and Management and continued his career with the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Gulf Coast. In this capacity, he continued to perform welding inspections on hull structure and piping systems on behalf of the government, performed oversight of NDT functions, served as the Quality Assurance Supervisor over the DDG and LPD programs, and currently resides as the NDT Level III Examiner for the command.
With 20 years of experience in the field, his specialty evolves around developing training programs, curriculum and certification examinations for various NDT methods.
